Daily Walks & Pet Sitting

What if….?

Do you worry about your pets when you travel? Do you avoid traveling because you don’t want to put your pets in a kennel – or feel guilty when you do? Or maybe your pets are wary of strangers, making finding the right solution difficult.

I got a call recently from Rich who had this very problem. He never felt right about leaving his dogs at the kennel. Tucker, the mixed breed herding dog has a hard time trusting people. Junior, the affable Golden Retriever appears to be much more happy go lucky, but he, too, is sensitive and suffers when his family is away.

Rich lives a little farther than I usualy travel, but I’m a sucker for herding dogs so I suggested we meet to see if I could help him out. Our meeting went well. Tucker showed signs of curiosity, although he remained cautious. We agreed to set up a series of visits before Rich and his family were going on vacation. Sometimes, family members were home when I stopped by, and at other times, they arranged to be out. While Tucker barked a lot and nipped at my heels just once, I knew that he was not an aggressive dog, so there was no need to be afraid of him. I just needed to work out a way to make him feel as stress free as possible when I came to visit. By planning ahead and working out any issues before the big trip, Rich’s concerns about Tucker’s insecurities were resolved, the dogs had a level of comfort with me coming into the house, and I was ready for the week ahead.

During our week together I solved the dogs’ problem of not wanting to eat (common among pets who miss their people) as well as maximized our bonding time by hand feeding them. By the end of the week, we’d made great progress. Now when Rich travels, he feels a lot better knowing that his dogs feel secure in their own environment, and receive the individual care that they deserve.
